Reimagining a Landmark Solar Thermal System at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Client: Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch
Location: Scottsdale, Arizona
Completion: 2025
Scope: Full system reinstallation and commissioning
Technology: 126 SunEarth TR-40-2 Solar Collectors + SolFlux Controller
Project Partners: Local distribution support from Solar Supply (Arizona)
The Challenge
In 2009, the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale made headlines with the installation of one of the largest solar water heating systems in the country, a bold move toward sustainability. Originally designed and installed by Novan, a company no longer in business, the system eventually fell into disrepair, leaving the hotel with an inactive solar asset and a gap in its sustainability portfolio.

With the original technology outdated and no longer supported, the property needed a trusted partner to revive the system, optimize performance, and bring the installation in line with modern energy goals.

The Approach
As part of its multi-million-dollar resort renovation, the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale committed to modernizing its solar hot water system with American-made solar thermal technology and local expertise.
System Reinstallation: The full array was dismantled, upgraded, and recommissioned.

Technology Refresh: 126 SunEarth TR-40-2 flat plate solar collectors were installed and paired with a SolFlux advanced differential controller to maximize energy capture, monitoring, and efficiency.
Local Support: Arizona-based distribution partners, including John and Jim Combs of Solar Supply, played a key role in supporting logistics and execution.

The Results

Legacy solar thermal system restored and modernized
126 TR-40-2 collector array reinstalled and recommissioned with a SolFlux controller
Energy performance realigned with modern sustainability goals
Long-term renewable energy asset secured for the resort’s operations
