Gypsum wall board, commonly known as drywall, is the technical product name used by manufacturers for a specific board/panel made of calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum), with or without additives, typically extruded between thick sheets of facer and backer paper, utilized in the construction of interior walls, ceiling, and partition systems in residential, institutional, and commercial structures and designed to provide a monolithic surface when joints and fastener heads are covered with a joint treatment system. One principal advantage of gypsum board over plywood, hardboard, and fiberboard is its strong fire resistance. Gypsum products also provide sound control, economy, versatility, quality, and convenience.
